Why we're going
In a word it's solidarity, taking practical action in support of friends overseas. In the South West of Algeria approximately 170,000 refugees live in five isolated and temporary desert camps. They've been here awaiting news of their legal right to self determination since 1975. The Sahrawi are refugees of Western Sahara, a former Spanish territory which was invaded by Morocco and illegally annexed from 1975 onwards.
The camps, in spite of their remote and harsh setting, are well organized and any supplies are distributed fairly. Thanks to a continuous education program literacy rates in the camps are up to 95%. A number of garden projects have been started to enable families to grow their own food and reduce their vulnerability to food aid shortages.
Land Rover convoys have been travelling under the sign of the rainbow from the UK to these refugee camps since the 1980's taking much needed supplies for schools, hospitals and garden projects.
